Injury updates organized by Week 6 Matchups

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs
GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
Thursday 8:15 PM ET

Stephania Bell’s perspective

Travis Kelce suffered a right lateral ankle sprain late in the first half of Week 5 when he slipped on the field and his right ankle bobbled quickly outward. He eventually returned to the game with his ankle heavily taped, a good initial sign, but it is often the first 24 hours immediately following the injury that inform how problematic it is going to be.

With the Chiefs having a game on Thursday night, the practices that do take place are light but head coach Andy Reid said he would be watching to see how Kelce moved around before deciding his availability. Kelce is listed as questionable on the pregame status report and it’s possible that just as in Week 1 — when Kelce was navigating a recent bone bruise — this decision comes down to the final hours before game time.

Javonte Williams has maintained a fairly consistent volume of work through the first four weeks of the season, a fairly remarkable feat considering the injury he sustained last season (ACL/LCL/PLC). In Week 4, that workload was diminished by a quadriceps injury and Williams then missed Week 5 as a result. Coach Sean Payton later said he was “close” to being able to go but ultimately they decided against it. Perhaps the team opted to hold him out with the four day window to Thursday night in mind. Williams was listed as Limited in Monday’s estimated practice report but participated in full on the days that counted. He is not listed on the team’s official pre-Thursday night game status report and is not expected to be limited.

Carolina Panthers at Miami Dolphins
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
Sunday 1:00 PM ET

Stephania Bell’s perspective

De’Von Achane certainly didn’t seem to be bothered much on Sunday as he scampered his way to 151 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Yes, those were just his rushing yards (he also caught a pass for 14 yards). But as coach Mike McDaniel would say on Monday when speaking about Achane’s knee injury, “(he) was in and out of the game … a standard rotation … he thought he might have something but he’s such a tough kid … it was kind of hard to read.” The fact that it wasn’t a severe enough acute event to force Achane out of the game indicated it wasn’t a de-stabilizing injury to the knee. But it was worrisome enough for the team to consider their options, including the one they finally settled on which was placing him on injured reserve.

The Dolphins are not offering specifics as to the nature of the injury but considering the demands of the running back position — including sharp acceleration/deceleration and change of direction maneuvers — as well as the speed with which Achane flies, there was a conscious decision to ensure that for him at least a month’s recovery is in order. The Dolphins operate such a high-octane offense that a skill position player like Achane coming back at anything less than full speed is not only inefficient, it is potentially risky for his bigger picture health. While the situation may be frustrating for fantasy managers after experiencing the joys of having Achane on the roster, at least there is some comfort in knowing this was not as severe as it could have been.

Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Chargers
SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California
Monday 8:15 PM ET

Stephania Bell’s perspective

Austin Ekeler has been out since injuring his right ankle in Week 1. A frustrated Ekeler acknowledged this was his first time experiencing a high ankle sprain and was trying to learn patience as he rehabbed diligently.

He has gradually progressed from individual drills to team drills in limited practice appearances. The bye week gave him another week to get healthier and on Tuesday he gave himself a 99 percent chance of playing in Week 6 (on Monday Night Football), according to ESPN’s Kris Rhim. While there can be a production dip for running backs in their initial return from a high ankle sprain, there are definitely outliers and those are usually the elite backs. It’s fair to say Ekeler is elite; the hope is he will indeed fit that outlier mark. presuming he suits up on Monday.
